Docked on the east side of the San Pablo lake, only 15 minutes from Otavalo, Cabañas del Lago is an oasis of luxury tucked between the small towns that surround the lake. This resort-style hotel offers a variety of lodging options including single rooms, cabins, suites, family cottages and romantic rooms with a view of the lake. Each room is equipped with a working fireplace, which is lit for you in the evenings, completing the rustic look of this well-built establishment.

The hotel also includes a mini golf course, boat rides, volleyball courts, a gift shop, water sports and a full-service restaurant on the shore of the lake. Even if you are not planning to stay for the night, this place is a perfect stop for lunch, coffee or an early dinner before heading back to Quito. The entrees range from $8 to $13, and in case you already spent all of your cash in the Otavalo market, you can charge the meal to your Mastercard or Visa.

Make sure to finish the experience with a glass of chocolate liquor –a specialty of the region– in front of the fireplace.

Going north on the Panamerican Highway on your way to Otavalo, turn right on the sign for San Pablo del Lago and follow the road through a couple of small towns, the last one San Pablo, there will be signs of Cabañas del Lago guiding you along the way.
