Shopping for Cotacahi's famed leather goods is the reason most people come to this little pueblo, and to do so, simply walk up and down Calle 10 de Agosto, which runs all the way through town (starting at the bus station). Here you will find shop after shop jam-packed with leather: jackets, shoes, belts, purses, wallets and vests and more. This is the best spot in Ecuador for buying genuine, handmade leather. Though the shops are almost identical in the type of goods they have to offer, quality does vary from store to store, so shop around before making any purchases.
Most stores are open daily from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., though several shut for a siesta between 12-3 p.m. Major credit cards are accepted in the majority of the shops, but note that you'll generally receive a discount if you pay in cash.
If you end up sticking around town for a few days (and this pleasant town has that sort of effect on travelers), you can ask the leather-workers to tailor or customize your purchases.
