Parque la Matriz can be found beneath the gaze of a towering sculpture of Jesus. La Matriz is Cotacachi’s main plaza and is ringed by the flags of a dozen diverse nations. A large glass plaque marks Cotacachi’s status as a UNESCO world heritage sight, and another nearby monument honors the city’s "democratization of municipal management."
One of the more notable features of the park is a statue of Santa Ana de Cotacachi wearing strings of local beads. Walk towards Iglesia Matriz (the church) and you’ll see several more statues of local religious figures. The church is beautiful, but you may have to be content with admiring the exterior, as Iglesia Matriz not always open to tourists.
The sights of Parque la Matriz can be enjoyed in the course of a brief stroll around the square. But one of the most rewarding things to do is just sit on a shady park bench to people-watch and enjoy the refreshing afternoon breeze.
