Due to it's popularity with both expats and tourists, there's a number of unpretentious but pleasant cafés and restaurants here, serving a mix of local and international dishes. For those on a budget, head down to the area around the bus station where you'll find cheap market-stall meals. While you're in Cotacachi, be sure to try carne colorada, the town's typical plate, which consists of beef cooked with achiote, a natural red seasoning (hence the name, "colored meat"), accompanied by plantains, potatoes, rice and avocado.
