Volcán Imbabura - Hiking Ibarra - Ecuador

This long-extinct volcano is located just south-west of Ibarra. The 4,630-meter (15,190-ft) high summit can be climbed in one long day (around 10 to 12 hours round trip) and, although not technically difficult, the loose rock at the top can make the traverse somewhat treacherous. It's a tiring but rewarding climb, with gorgeous views. You can choose to do the climb with a tour operator (agencies in Otavalo offer it), or go independently. For the latter, head to the tiny village of La Esperanza (just outside of Ibarra) which sits at the foot of the volcano. Here you can either climb solo or hire a guide from one of two hotels (See La Esperanza for more information). To shorten the climb, you can take a camioneta (truck) for $5 from La Esperanza to the water tank, from where it is around three hours' climb to the top.
