Tumbabiro

Tumbabiro is a small, rural village located approximately 40 minutes northwest of Ibarra. Most of the people who live in this area still cultivate crops using largely traditional methods. Many of the buildings in and around the main square are very old and were originally constructed using adobe mud bricks and local timbers. There are also a number of very old adobe walls that surround the nearby fields.

The area around Tumbabiro has numerous paths and roads, many of which are free from traffic and good for walking. On the weekends, you can watch local men playing a traditional ball game, Pelota en Mano, at the village's main square. From Tumbabiro, you can also catch buses to Urcuqui, Cahuasqui and Ibarra.

About 4 km north of Tumbabiro, close to Ajumbuela village, there is a complete, double-ramped Caranqui pyramid. Although the edifice is covered with vegetation, the pyramid is in excellent condition; many pottery fragments dating from 500-1500 BC have been found in the area.

More information -- in English, German and Spanish -- is available at Hosteria Pantavi. The hotel can also arrange for guide to take you on a tour.

If you plan on staying in Tumbabiro, another loding option is Tio Lauro. The establishment offers basic accommodation, with shared bathroom and shower, for $8 per person. The hostel is clean and friendly and the prices include breakfast. Hostel staff speak Spanish only.
