Ibarra Things to See and Do

follow us

Much of what there is to do in Ibarra involves wandering around its plazas, churches and museums, while snacking on nogadas and helado de paila, some of Ibarra’s sweeter specialties. To start, take a stroll to the tree-filled Parque Merced on Calle Flores, and visit the Basílica de La Merced (open at mass times only: daily at 6.30 p.m. as well as 7 a.m.-12 p.m. on Sundays), with its lofty red-and-gold altarpiece. After, wander to the beautiful Parque Pedro Moncayo where you'll find the cathedral (open during mass and confession times only), where portraits of the 12 disciples, painted by Rafael Troya (one of Ecuador's most celebrated artists) are displayed. From the plaza, walk a few blocks north to the Iglesia Santo Domingo (open all day) which has a small collection of religious paintings.

Ibarra's main museum, Museo Banco Central, is well worth a visit, as is the suburb of Caranqui, two kilometers (1.24 mi) south of the center, rumored to be the birthplace of the Inca King Atahualpa; here you can visit the engaging Iglesia Señor del Amor (which is said to be built on the top of an Inca temple) as well as the Museo de Atahualpa. For day tripping outside the city, head to the peaceful shores of Laguna Yahuarcocha, or the woodcarving capital of San Antonio de Ibarra. Ibarra is also en route to Esmeraldas, if you want a quick dip in the ocean.
