Hotel

By Christopher Minster

Located about a half-hour north of Ibarra and not far from the villages of the Chota Valley, this charming hacienda is out of the way for most travelers, but it is well worth going out of your way to get there. It is particularly apt for those travelers that would like to spend a night at a converted hacienda, as it is one of the more affordable ones, falling easily into the mid-range category.

Pantaví is managed by an Ecuadorian artist, and his works adorn the walls of many of the rooms and common areas. His art is very good and modern, and give the hacienda a more sort of hip feel, while being always tasteful and appealing. His name is Camilo and if he’s around, he’s usually happy to talk about his paintings and works.

Because of the ever-present modern art, Pantaví does not have the aged, somewhat dusty feel of some of Ecuador’s other converted haciendas. The rooms are ample and tasteful, and the bathrooms are clean and neat. There is a dining area, where they tend to rely more on fixed meals than on a standard menu. If it is nice out, you’ll want to snag a table on the outside porch. The bar area is new but built in a sort of retro-hacienda style in keeping with the overall ambience. The gardens are quite pleasant for a quick stroll, and they’re expanding them.

Pantaví has a small game room with darts and a ping-pong table, and there is a very nice pool on the premises. The hacienda is within a quick drive of all of the Chota Valley, as well as the hot springs at Chachimbiro. Even though Pantaví is about an hour away from Otavalo, some visitors in the area to see the market do decide to stay there.

Somewhat small, Pantaví only has about fourteen rooms. If you go, be sure to ask to see the bathroom in room #14. I won’t say any more, I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise, just ask to see it. Trust me.
