The largest hotel complex on the shores of Laguna Yaguarcocha is located in a valley on the northeast side of Ibarra. Imperio del Sol looks out over the sprawling lake to the voluptuous, rolling green mountains beyond. The rooms are clean and comfortable, with private bathrooms, hot water, cable TV and telephones.

The hotel complex includes volleyball, tennis and squash courts. Imperio del Sol also has an amazing outdoor patio, which is often the centerpiece for local weddings and conferences.

Although breakfast is not included, for $2.50 an "Americano" breakfast -- eggs, bread, juice or coffee -- can be had at the Imperio del Sol Restaurante. Snag a table near the windows for a spectacular view of the lake and mountains.

Stick around at night, dinners cost about $5.50 and the entertainment afterward usually includes karaoke or a piano player. If you want to stroll on the racetrack which encircles the lake during the day, you can always have the restaurant box you a lunch for about $2.50.

Situated on the northeast side of Ibarra in the valley. It is a 25 cent bus ride, or 3 dollar taxi jaunt. Just say Laguna Yahuarocha and anyone in Ibarra will know what you are talking about and take you to the lake.
