Hotel

By Dawn Wohlfarth Arteaga

In Cotopaxi province is Volcano Land, a small hostería specializing in adventure travel. It is about an hour and forty minutes from Quito. Visitors leave the highway near Machachi and continue up the road for another half hour.

It is a converted hacienda, but the hacienda itself is as old as some others in the area. The hostería complex boasts a social area/mess hall, a store where you can purchase necessities and souvenirs and a working farm, where hotel guests are encouraged to help out with daily activities such as milking. The rooms are small, but cozy and neat.

Volcano Land caters to tourists with a bit more cash than the typical backpacker. Specialists in adventure travel, Volcano Land offers horseback riding, bird watching, trekking, camping and other outdoor activities. Volcano Land has adventures and activities for all levels of age and fitness: from simple walks and hikes to far more difficult challenges: it is even possible to arrange to climb Cotopaxi volcano, a difficult and technical undertaking.

Part of Volcano Land is actually inside Cotopaxi park. The highlands can get quite cold, so visitors are asked to pack appropriately.

For a simple overnight stay, the cost is $20/person, double occupancy, including breakfast. If you’re interested in a full day of biking, trekking, horseback riding, etc, the all-inclusive rate is from $69-$89 per person per day, depending on the number of people in your group.
