Parque la Matriz sprawls pleasantly under the gaze of a towering sculpture of Jesus. It is Cotacachi’s main plaza, unmistakably ringed by the flags of a dozen diverse nations. Fitting, since this is where the city displays its international awards. A large glass plaque marks Cotacachi’s status as a UNESCO world heritage sight, and another nearby monument honors the city’s “democratization of municipal management”. Now that’s something to get excited about!

In the center of the park, a statue of Santa Ana de Cotacachi is notable for the saint’s attire. The rings of beads around her neck are typical local style. Walk towards Iglesia Matriz (the church) and you’ll see several more statues of local religious figures. As beautiful as the church is, you may have to content yourself with admiring it from the outside, as it’s not always open to tourists.

Across from the church is the headquarters of the local government. Look to the left of the building and you’ll see a striking mural, one of two that surround the park. All of these sights can be enjoyed in the course of a brief stroll around the square. But the most rewarding thing to do is just sit in the shade on one of the park’s benches. It’s a great place to people-watch, and to enjoy the refreshing afternoon breeze.

Getting There
Just follow the towering statue of Jesus that stands on top of the cathedral. It's visible from anywhere in the city.
