Cotacachi

By Laura Granfortuna

This little town, at the foot of the dormant Cotacachi volcano, is best known for its production of cheap, high-quality, handmade leather goods. The area is also rich in biodiversity, making it an attractive place for activities like camping, hiking, bird watching and fly fishing. The best place to go for outdoor activities and adventures is the Cayapas reserve, although the volcano is also a nice spot for hiking and climbing.

The diverse cultural and ethnic makeup of Cotacachi has become a central focus for the town, as well as a great source of pride. A lot of effort has been put into creating tolerance and solidarity among the indigenous, black, and mestizo populations there, and in 1996 Cotocachi became the first town in Ecuador to elect an indigenous mayor. The town has even received awards from UNESCO (United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and other international organizations for its persistent work on integration, education, and urban development.

That may surprise as you enter the town on its dusty, potholed road and approach the unimpressive “center” plaza. Keep going, though, and you’ll see what all the fuss is about. In its best sectors, Cotacachi is clean and well-maintained. Charming plazas are surrounded by huge, bright buildings painted in pink, yellow and green. Step onto the next sidestreet, however, and you will be confronted by dirty, crumbling facades and decaying infrastructure. Although it must have improved immensely, it seems Cotacachi still has a long way to go.

Living in Cotacachi

Rating: 100%

This small town is very lovely. The views of the mountains and volcanos are beautiful. The cost of living is very low and the locals are very nice people. This is where I want to retire.
