Hacienda Cusin

Location:
Otavalo, Ecuador

Hotel

By Christopher Minster

One of the most elegant and prestigious haciendas in the northern highlands, Hacienda Cusin is a beautiful and peaceful complex of buildings, gardens and patios. Some of the buildings date back to the colonial era, when the owners of Cusin oversaw more than 100,000 acres in the nearby valleys. Today, it is a favorite for visitors on the luxury tour circuit. It also hosts numerous weddings and other special events.

It is only about a half hour from Otavalo, and tends to fill up on weekends with tourists headed to the market.

Cusin offers horseback riding, mountain biking, a game room and sports courts, and can also arrange tours or even Spanish classes.

Rates run from $75 for a single to $140 for a quad. Garden suites are somewhat costlier. Breakfast is included. Their special “umbrella rate” of $100/person per day is worth checking out: it includes all meals, horseback rides, mountain bikes, use of the internet, and room upgrades when available. Reservations made via the internet get a 10% discount.
