Hacienda Pinsaqui

Location:
Otavalo, Ecuador

Restaurant, Hotel

By Christopher Minster

Located exactly between the market towns of Otavalo, Cotacachi (known for leather goods) and San Antonio de Ibarra (known for wood carvings), Pinsaqui is the perfect place for the tourist who has come to visit the markets and also wants the comfort and elegance of one of the most beautiful haciendas in the north of Ecuador.

Pinsaqui is one of the most historic haciendas: Simón Bolívar used to visit Pinsaqui when he would travel between Ecuador and Colombia (the ‘Simón Bolívar Room’ is the most elegant suite in the hotel) and “The treaty of Pinsaqui” was signed in one of the haciendas’ grand salons, ending a war between Ecuador and Colombia in the nineteenth century.

Recently converted, Pinsaqui still feels more like a home than a hotel. The staff is friendly, helpful and courteous. The hacienda is a maze of well-kept, beautiful gardens, patios, airy hallways, unique guest rooms (all of which have private bath and either a wood stove or a fireplace) and fountains.

Of particular interest is the bar area, which is the only part of the hacienda to survive a volcanic eruption and earthquake in the nineteenth century. It is a charming, cozy room with a large fireplace, decorated with old saddles and equestrian trophies won by Pinsaqui horses over the years. Guests are invited to the bar for a nightly welcome cocktail, occasionally presented by the owner himself. A local Andean music band completes the ambience.

Pinsaqui has a limited number of horses and can arrange for rides along the trails in back of the hacienda. It also boasts large rooms which can serve as conference facilities. Pinsaqui can host special events such as weddings.

Prices range from $99 for a single to $130 for a double. Breakfast is included, and lunch or dinner can be ordered off of the menu in the restaurant. The usual cost for a meal is about $15.

Traveler Reviews of Hacienda Pinsaqui

Wonderful Hacienda

Rating: 100%

My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Hacienda during out travels in Ecuador, and we absolutely loved it. Apparently, not all of the rooms are created equally, but we had a wonderful room in the main house. The room was beautiful, with a large fireplace (they started the fire when we were eating dinner). It is a bit chilly at night, but there are plenty of blankets, so we never got cold when we were sleeping. The grounds are well maintained, and they have a welcome cocktail in the evening, with live music and give you a history of the hacienda.

The staff is very friendly and helpful, and we took advantage of the riding tour. The food is decent, but not excellent, and is expensive for the area. It is convenient to many of the different Indian Pueblos and other smaller towns for sightseeing and shopping.

We hired a local guide who was FANTASTIC to take us on a tour through the local villages. His name was Louis, and you can ask for him through the Hacienda, as he was recommended by the manager.

It was a wonderful relaxing break, coming from Quito, and the history of the Hacienda is simply icing on the cake.
