Located about an hour from Otavalo (it's actually closer to Ibarra), Hacienda Zuleta is a good option for the traveler who wants an authentic hacienda experience. Like the haciendas of old, Zuleta is a working, 4,000 acre farm with a stable of over 90 horses. There is an embroidery workshop and a working dairy farm on the premises.

Built in 1691, the hacienda has the wide halls, spacious rooms, beautiful gardens, and fine dining travelers have come to expect from haciendas in the north. Unlike most of the other converted haciendas in the region, Zuleta still considers tourism and guests as a secondary source of income; it is still primarily a large farm. There are only nine guest rooms, guests need to make a reservation, and there is a two-night minimum stay. The restaurant features fine organic food, most of which is produced at the hacienda.

Zuleta offers the usual hacienda activities, such as horseback riding, mountain biking, trekking, and tours of the nearby pre-Columbian Caranqui pyramids. They pride themselves on their horses, however, and offer classes and week-long riding programs. They are about two hours from Quito, and can arrange for airport pickup if desired.
