Owner‘s Description

Margaret and Frank, the American owners, have done a fabulous job in decorating the hotel with wonderful handicrafts from Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia to create one of the prettiest hotels around Otavalo. There's also one of the nicest gift shops in town, which is filled with quality wares versus the same exact thing found in every booth in the Plaza de Ponchos market.

On Friday nights, there is live Andean music in the dining room for both hotel guests and the public to enjoy while trying out some of the delicious and imaginative fare. Ask for one of the rooms on the right side (on Calle Quito). there's less traffic noise there. Also, the hotel runs a foundation to aid the less fortunates local families. Ask Margaret to give you the run-down on where the donations go or visit their web site.

If you're keen for something a bit further outside the city (and a good bit quieter), but don't want to sacrifice the comfort and first-class service, then head to the owner's newest establishment: Ali Shungu Mountain Top Lodge.

Getting There:
The hotel has a pickup service from the airport in Quito, or you can take a bus from the Quito bus terminal. They leave every 20 minutes and it's a lovely 2 hour ride. (No toilets on the buses, though!)

An authentic Otavalo Experience

I really liked the indigenous atmosphere, the food was delicious and the owner was very accommodating; he helped us find fun things to do around Otavalo.

Hotel Ali Shungu is Wonderful

Loved the owners, the location, the nice sized rooms, the tons of hot water, the warm blankets on a comfy bed and their to-die-for tomato-basil soup! Disliked: Not a thing!
