Café Mundi is an Otavalo institution that is run by a charming local couple and their children. The café is a small place, with a few dining tables and one long, low coffee table surrounded by surprisingly comfortable leather benches. The windows are plastered with testimonials from former customers. The food ranges from just passable to excellent – the Ecuadorian main dishes (platos fuertes) tend to be the best. Café Mundi is located right on the Plaza de Ponchos, so you can duck in for a quick coffee or a bite to eat when you need a break from the bustle of the market. The restaurant is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., but closes earlier if there are no customers.
