There are several walking trails accessible from the town, including a pre-Columbian stone path that leads from a few kilometers down the valley from the town, all the way to the town of Chaco in the Oriente, a 3-day hike. See Ecuador Climbing and Hiking Guide for more information about hikes and treks in the area. Two kilometres (1.2 miles) out of town on this road is a collection of ruins consisting of several stone houses and a cemetery that were abandoned around a hundred years ago probably because of high landslide risks. An hour or so down the trail, there are some land forms that look suspiciously like Caranqui pyramids (but locals cannot confirm this), and a few hours more on the trail is El Pueblo Viejo, the “old town” which is now nothing but a few flat clearings that make for an excellent camping stop on the trek to the Oriente.
