Tulcán’s sole worthwhile attraction is the lovely topiary in the cemetery at the far end of town. The cypress hedges which line the alleys have been clipped into hundreds of carved arches, rotund birds, chubby monkeys and squat pre-Columbian figures, creating something like a beautiful bestiary. With any luck, while taking a stroll around the quiet garden, you will come across the head gardened shearing away, and he will happily point out the most recent creations. The first bushes were made into “esculturas en verde” (green sculptures) in 1936 by Don José María Franco Guerrero, basing his creations on ceramics with pre-Columbian and Egyptian motifs. His son carries on with his work, which has inspired some neighboring villages, like El Angel, to clip the trees of their squares.
