Ecuador – Colombia Border Crossing: Rumichaca

The principle border crossing between Ecuador and Colombia is Rumichaca, just seven kilometres (4.4 miles) north of Tulcán and three kilometres (1.8 miles) south of Ipiales, Colombia. Immigration for both countries is open 6 a.m.-10 p.m.

Mini-buses ($0.75) and taxis (colectivos or shared taxis, $0.85; private $4) may be caught at Tulcan’s bus terminal or from Parque Ayora. The taxi or van will drop you off in the parking lot across from Ecuador immigration. If you are entering Ecuador, a maximum of 90 days (within a 365-day period) is given.

After going through Ecuador immigration, cross the river to Colombia migración. Usually only 60 days are given upon entering, but go ahead and ask for 90. There is one line for entry stamps, and another for exit stamps. The immigration building also has the offices for travellers crossing in private vehicles, bathrooms and an exchange house.

Combis (mini-vans, $0.80) to Ipiales’ bus terminal or a taxi to Parque La Pola downtown ($3) leave from the parking lot in front of the steps to immigration.

Freelance money changers work on both sides of the border. Be sure to check all calculations for accuracy and bills for authenticity, and count your money well. Transportation fares on either side can be paid in dollars or Colombian pesos.
