V!VA User‘s Description

An attractive little village on the river of the same name, Gualaceo is known as "The Garden of Azuay" (Azuay being the name of the province). It is located about an hour away from Cuenca, in the heart of a fertile agricultural region known for fruit.

The best time for visitors is Sunday, market day. Gualaceo's market is small but picturesque, and shoppers can find handmade baskets and other articles.

There is a pleasant little park along the river that is excellent for a stroll. If you go far enough, you'll come across the remains of a Spanish aqueduct from the colonial period.

Buses to Gualaceo leave every half-hour or so from Cuenca. Also, travel agencies in Cuenca offer tours that normally include the towns of Gualaceo, Chordeleg and (sometimes) Sigsig.
