While not offering Quito's variety of options and competition, Cuenca has a good selection of Spanish Schools.  Studying here as opposed to Quito is appealing to many travelers due to Cuenca's smaller size, and relative safety.  You will also have more opportunities to interact with locals, as you practice conjugations, as there is a much smaller tourist crowd.  Cuenca is one of Ecuador's most expensive cities, but its quaint, colonial atmosphere will continue to attract Spanish students for years to come.
