Once considered to be one of the more dangerous markets in town, in the last few years the 10 de Agosto Market has had a tremendous face lift. Redesigned and cleaned up, it now proudly flaunts its new image; it also has the privilege of being the only market in Cuenca with an escalator.

For a taste of real Cuencan life, come to the market and meander down the aisles of women selling fresh fruit and medicinal herbs. Or sample one of the mouth watering smoothies, which come in any number of flavors here.

For a cheap and hearty lunch, head to the second floor. If you have any specific ailments, the far right hand section on the second floor is filled medicinal plants to make teas, and the women selling them will be happy to let you know what plant will best assuage your respective ailment.

Interesting local culture

The locals in Cuenca don't have much in the way of supermarkets, so they go to the 10 Agosto market for their food and stuff. The market is fascinating if you're intertested in the day-to-day lives of the locals. Not much to buy if you're a visitor, but a neat place to check out and take some photos.
