Mercado 10 de Agosto - Shopping Cuenca - Ecuador

Once considered to be one of the more dangerous markets in town, in the last few years Mercado 10 de Agosto has had a tremendous facelift and is now a nice place to visit for an authentic local experience, or to buy cheap produce for cooking in hostels. Redesigned and cleaned up, it now proudly flaunts its new image; it also has the privilege of being the only market in Cuenca with an escalator. For a taste of real Cuencan life, come here and meander down the aisles of women selling fresh fruit and vegetables or medicinal herbs. Sample one of the many juices or smoothies made here with fresh fruits, some exotic to foreigners.

For a cheap and hearty lunch, head to the second floor. If you have any specific ailments, the far righthand section on the second floor is filled medicinal plants to make teas, and the women selling them will be happy to let you know what plant will best assuage your respective ailment.
