The Pumapungo Museum, also known as the Central Bank Museum, is actually a complex of several smaller exhibits, each dedicated to a different aspect of Cuenca life or history. The museum is next to the site of Tomebamba, an ancient Inca city.
The ethnographic exhibit (on the second floor) is based on the theory that a great deal can be learned about a culture through their everyday objects. There are informational displays about Ecuador's various cultures, including a series of shrunken heads from the Amazon.
The archaeological museum contains many pieces and relics unearthed nearby, mostly from the Inca and CaƱari cultures, including an exhibit about the neighbouring Tombebamba archaeological site, which you can visit
Also on the premises is an exhibit of religious art and a numismatic exhibit, which has extensive displays of coins and currency. The museum also has rotating displays, such as a series of photographs of famous locations in Ecuador.

If you enjoy museums or history, you'll love the Museo del Banco Central. I visited with a group and wished I could have spent more time there. There is information about many different cultural groups, and the bird exhibit outside was fun too.
