If you measure a city on size or population alone, Cuenca ranks third in Ecuador. If you consider charm, beauty and the opinion of all Ecuadorians, however, Cuenca leaps into first place. It is a lost colonial jewel, a neat, orderly city set in the picturesque rolling hills of southern Ecuador.

Traveler Reviews of Cuenca

I miss Cuenca

Rating: 100%

I loved almost everything about Cuenca. I felt safe there (as long as I followed common sense and didn't wander around alone at night) and found many restaurants that I loved. It's just a beautiful city, with many things to do for fun (shopping at markets, visiting nearby historical or natural sites, going to museums, etc) and many nice people!

Inca Real Hotel

Rating: 100%

I loved this hotel!! Very authentic. It had 2 court yards, the main courtyard had dinning in the middle. Centrally located to markets, churches, museums.

Athens of the Andes

Rating: 100%

I love Cuenca. I have been going there since 1995 and am going again this summer. Great place all around. The people are nice and it is breath takingly beautiful from the spanish colonial architecture and cobblestone streets to the montains that emerge as the back drop. There is no place I love more.
