Museum

By Christopher Minster

The Pumapungo Museum, also known as the Central Bank Museum, is actually a complex of several other smaller museums, each dedicated to a different aspect of Cuenca life or history. The museum itself is at the site of Tombebamba, an ancient Inca city which is being excavated.

The Ethnographic museum is based on the theory that a great deal can be learned about a culture through their everyday objects. They have informational displays about Ecuador's various cultures: most of the major cultures in Ecuador are represented.

The Archaeological museum contains many pieces and relics unearthed nearby, mostly from the Inca and Cañari cultures. There are also exhibits and it is possible to visit the excavation site.

Also on the premises is a museum of religious art and a numismatic museum (which has displays of coins and currency).

Traveler Reviews of Pumapungo Museum

Interesting

Rating: 100%

If you enjoy museums or history, you'll love the Museo del Banco Central. I visited with a group and wished I could have spent more time there. There is information about many different cultural groups, and the bird exhibit outside was fun too.
