Macondo is a very nice budget hostel and serves sleepy backpackers well; rooms are priced under $30 for two people. Although Macondo is not the most luxurious place, rooms are clean and comfortable. Plus, the price comes with continental breakfast and kitchen access.

H. Macondo
It is only a few blocks from the main plaza. Our room was huge, comfortable and spotless and the hot shower was the best in S.A. so far. The staff were really helpful, there was a lockable drawer in our room and there's a lovely garden. The rooms on the inner courtyard (by the front door/reception) were a little noisy but nothing earplugs didn't solve and the breakfast a little meager but these were minor niggles.
I love Cuenca
Hostal Macondo is clean, the staff is friendly, and there's a good breakfast.
