Safety in Cuenca

Most travelers and expats feel completely at ease in Cuenca and don't feel threatened by some of the annoyances and dangers that exist in other Ecuadorian cities. Especially compared to Quito and Guayaquil, Cuenca is a very laid-back and safe place, which adds to its overall appeal. However, that does not mean you should let down your guard completely, as it is a city after all. Just use common sense, go with your gut, and ask locals before venturing to areas off the typical tourist grid and you should be fine. It is always a good idea to leave documents and valuables in your hotel room instead of bringing them out with you and to keep an eye on your belongings at all times. At night, stay within well-lit areas and walk in groups instead of alone.
