Café Eucalyptus

A staple for many foreigners living in Cuenca, as well as a local crowd, this restaurant offers comfort food you can’t easily find elsewhere: from Pad Thai to Jamaican jerk chicken to comida tipica, as well as a long drink list. Located in a renovated colonial house and owned by an American woman, the restaurant fills two floors, with a full bar on the lower level and a dance floor in the covered patio. The back wall is filled with caricatures of all of the regulars that frequent the café. At night the place fills up and there is often live salsa music, so be sure to bring your dancing shoes.Mon - Thurs 11 am - midnight; Fri 11 am - 1 am; Sat 5 pm - midnight; Sun 5 pm - 11 pm.

Traveler Reviews of Café Eucalyptus

I have to agree, bad service is their speciality

I have to agree with the previous post, the service is awful. The staff does not try to wait on you, the just hang out at the corner of the bar joking around with each other. Could be a great place with better management.

Worst service ever!!

Worst service I have found in Cuenca, you have to beg them to get you a drink or to get them to take an order. It's like they don't want your money but they want your tips. I have been in the place 3 times a week for the last month and it's always the same! I'm now looking for another place to go who wants to earn my money.

The food was good once upon a time...

At one time, Eucalyptus filled a much-needed gourmet and international food niche in Cuenca.  Unfortunately, things have seem to have started going downhill.  It is not unusual to receive poor service (waiting over an hour) or food that is unacceptable (undercooked chicken, things in your food that should not be).  This may be because of the change in management over the past couple of years.  For most cuencanos, it is a place to be seen...which can create a rather snobby air.  The ever-rising prices don´t help things either.

One thing that  Eucalyptus is great for is live music.  If you are in town on a Thursday-Saturday night and can afford the ¨cover¨ (they advertise no cover, but you do need to pay between $3-8 to enter) it is definitely worth it.

Good place if you're sick of Ecuadorian food!

Great atmosphere and good food. Salsa dancing with a live band on the weekends. It can be a little "gringo-heavy".

Best in town

Best place to meet other travellers. Cosy fireplace if the night is cold. Best bar selection in the city, if not the whole of South America. I went there 4 times and had over 25 different dishes at great prices. I would love a job there!!!

Great food

I liked the food, I had an Asian Fusion type dish which was delicious. The ambience was pleasant. There are tables on the ground floor, where there is also the bar area and a bit of a dance area which can get busy later. Great margaritas too!
