While not offering Quito's variety of options and competition, Cuenca has a good selection of Spanish schools. Studying here, as opposed to Quito, is appealing to many travelers due to Cuenca's smaller size and relative safety. You will also have more opportunities to interact with locals as you practice conjugations. Many of the Spanish programs include cultural activities—such as salsa dancing, cooking classes, city tours and day trips to nearby attractions—and can set students up with homestays and/or volunteering opportunities to enhance language study. Cuenca is one of Ecuador's most expensive cities, but its quaint, colonial atmosphere will continue to attract Spanish students for years to come.
