A highlight of any stay in the Vilcabamba region, for those who wish to splurge, Madre Tierra offers outstanding accommodation and first-class service. To relax and recharge for a couple of days, head to the health spa and indulge in a luxurious facial or massage, along with more exotic treatments.

Set around a landscaped organic garden, each room features its own colorful style (and all have 24-hour hot water). Prices include breakfast and dinner, and veggie-maniacs will be glad to hear that every day features a different veggie option. If you're not staying at the hotel, you can still eat there, but sometimes the place fills up: be sure to call ahead. Other facilities include laundry service, a bar with DirecTV, a jacuzzi and free internet use for guests. Madre Tierra is located 2 kilometers outside the village of Vilcabamba heading toward Loja and is well signposted from the main road.

Rates at the spa are very reasonable, from a short reflexology treatment (foot massage) for $9 to "the works" for $25 (taxes not included). The spa has a pleasant jacuzzi which is great after a hike. You do not need to be staying at the hotel to come and hire services at the spa (but you should make reservations).

Madre Tierra doesn't have a proper travel agency on the premises, but can help arrange basic excursions such as horseback trips or visits to nearby Podocarpus.

It is the staff who make the difference, and the food and the rooms themselves are just an added bonus. This is an unexpected Shangri La. Be warned, though, you will have to climb flights of steep stone stairs to access most of the rooms. It will give you some good aerobic exercise.
