Ecuador is considered one of the best destinations in the world for whitewater sports due to the steep drop-offs from snow-capped peaks to rich lowland areas connected by one of the highest concentrations of rushing rivers per square kilometer. In addition, its tropical location provides for year-round water sports. Whether you are interested in whitewater rafting or kayaking, Ecuador has the tours, isolated destinations and heart-racing rapids.
Where to Go?
Tena is the biggest kayak and rafting destination in Ecuador; some say it offers the best kayaking rapids in Latin America. Many travelers choose to start in Quito and shop around the dozens of tour operators that base their operations in the capital before heading out. Santo Domingo also has a developed whitewater community, and offers warmer water than mountain rivers at higher altitudes. For something a bit more low-key, head down to Baños and give rafting a go on the RÃo Pastaza.
Packing List
Swimsuit, tennis shoes or Teva-like sandals with secure ankle straps, T-shirt (quick-drying material is best), easy-dry shorts or running tights, safety strap if wearing glasses, and waterproof cameras are all suggested. Don't forget a waterproof bag for anything you want to keep dry during your trip and a dry change of clothes for the trip back to Quito.
