Along the waters of Ecuador's coastline you'll find only one real opportunity to submerge yourself underwater and explore all the wonders that the region hides. On the mainland, Puerto Lopez is a hotspot for snorkelers and divers alike interested in heading out to Isla de la Plata and/or Palo Santo to explore an interesting mix of fish that swim around its waters. Note that July-September is whale-watching season there, and that's an opportunity that shouldn't be missed if you find yourself there during that time. Also note that it's during these months that the water temperature is actually at its coldest, hovering around 16ºC (61ºF).
The Galapagos Islands obviously takes the cake for some unbelievable and fantastic diving in and around the islands. You'll get to swim along the hammerheads and whale sharks, should you choose to venture out to the archipelago. Definitely an opportunity you shouldn't pass up on if you're a die-hard diver.
