Ecuador Internet Access, WiFi and Internet Cafes

Ecuador Internet Access
Internet accessibility in Ecuador is improving, but still has a long way to go. If you are bringing a laptop to Ecuador, you can find WiFi hotspots in major cities like Quito and Guayaquil. However, once you venture outside the larger cities, you will find internet sporadic and pricy.

WiFi in Ecuador
WiFi is becoming more common in Ecuador; however, signal strength widely varies. Not only do many mid- to high-end hotels in have WiFi on-site, but also foreign-targeted hostels; simply ask for the password to gain access. Several nicer cafes and restaurants in Quito, Cuenca and Guayaquil also offer free WiFi access. If having WiFi is important for your trip, be sure to research and plan your accommodation in advance, as it's not as widely available here as in other European or North American countries. Also, check with VIVA Travel Guides: we normally state whether a lodging or restaurant has WiFi on-site. Quito has installed free WiFi zones at several of the city’s plazas and parks; see for a listing of access points.

Ecuador Internet Cafes
Internet cafes are cheap and ubiquitous in major cities like Quito and Guayaquil. Internet costs $0.50-1.50 per hour, though cafes in smaller towns tend to be a bit pricier than that. The quality of Ecuador internet cafés widely varies: some offer broadband connection and flat-screen monitors, while others are painfully slow and have keypads loosely dangling off the keyboard. Many Ecuador internet cafes come equipped with headsets, web cams and Skype, and some come with international keyboards. It pays to shop around and find a good café that suits your needs and budget. o Additionally, in many areas, connection gets slow 3-10 p.m., when kids get out of school and hop on the Internet.
