Geography of Ecuador

At 283,560 square kilometers (176,196 sq mi), Ecuador is about the size of the US state of Nebraska and slightly larger than the United Kingdom. Bordered by Peru to the south and Colombia to the north, the nation forms a small bulge off the Pacific northwestern coast of South America, with the equator cutting across the northern part of the country.

Ecuador is divided into four distinctive regions, making it one of the most varied countries in the world for its small size. Pacific coastal lowlands lie to the west, the extremely bio-diverse jungles of the Amazon basin form the east, and the arresting peaks of the Andes cut down through the center of the country and constitute the central highland region. The country also holds the unique archipelago of the Galápagos Islands some 1,000 kilometers (621 mi) off-shore to the west.

Almost all rivers in Ecuador drain to the Amazon, with a few exceptions. The major waterways are: the Napo, Pastaza and Putumaçyo, which all drain to the east; and Daule-Guayas and Guayllabamba-Esmeraldas, which flow into the Pacific Ocean.
