Religion in Ecuador

Indigenous groups once practiced different religions across Ecuador, but the arrival of the Spanish wiped out much of this diversity. Using fear, intimidation and bribery, the country was almost completely converted to Catholicism. Today, even those Amazon villages that have never seen a car have Catholic churches. Many rural villages that once practiced other religions still blend old traditions with the practice of Catholicism. Native religious celebrations are still occasionally held at Ingapirca, the most important Inca site in Ecuador.

Other Christian denominations with temples in Ecuador are Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Episcopalian, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Mennonite, Baptist and Mormon, as well as a number of evangelical and Pentecostal churches. Other faiths represented in Ecuador are Judaism, Islam, Buddhist, Hinduism and Spiritualism.

In 2012, the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Estadística y Censos (INEC) conducted a study that revealed that 80.4 percent of Ecuadorians are Catholic, and 19.6 percent of the population belong to another religion, or is atheist or agnostic.
