Ecuador Security Tips for Mid-range Travelers

+ Add a Photo

By Christopher Minster

Mid-range travelers are not considered to be as much at risk for theft or other security problems as budget travelers are.  But in a country like Ecuador, where there is a lot of crime and unemployment, any visitor should be extra careful.

If you're traveling by bus, lock your packs or suitcases if you can. If you're with a reputable travel agency, you can relax when it comes to your things: if they tell you it's okay to leave your things on the bus on a trip, such as a shopping visit to Otavalo, then you can. When staying at hotels, lock valuables in the security safe or at reception but don't worry much - theft of valuables by hotel staff or outsiders is very rare although not unheard of. See our security section for more general tips.
