Location:
N5-16 Ca. García Moreno
Centro Histórico, Quito, Ecuador
Historical Building
Originally the mansion of Quito’s founder, Juan Díaz de Hidalgo, the Plaza Grande was Quito’s first luxury hotel. Renovated and restored in 2005, it now plays host to visiting dignitaries, including a recent stopover by Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez, (no word as to whether the socialist revolutionary indulged in any of the minibar’s ample selection of American beers).
Although a stay in the $1,500/night Presidential Suite may be a tad out of your price range, there are activities here for all budgets. Those that have some money to burn should consider a meal, or at least a drink, in one of the hotel’s top-notch bars and restaurants. It goes without saying that the food and wines are of the highest caliber. Dress snappy, as you’re likely to find yourself hobnobbing with Latin America’s elite.
The hotel also features a weekly tango performance, as well as live music every night. Schedules and prices vary with the season, but at time of writing the cheapest shows started at $15 per person.
If your budget can’t accommodate these extravagances, show up with a smart appearance and a polite demeanor and the staff will be happy to invite you on a free tour of the elegant facilities. The fourth floor balcony offers an unbeatable view of the Plaza Grande below. Take a moment to absorb the hustle and bustle of the square, while a rose-filled fountain trickles gently beside you. To your right, you’ll get a great view of the Presidential Palace.
With some cajoling and a sympathetic receptionist, you might even score a firsthand glimpse of the Presidential Suite. Whatever you do, don’t touch anything! If President Chávez comes back and the TV remote is broken, there’ll be hell to pay.
Getting There
Located on Plaza de la Independencia, on the corner of Ca. García Moreno and Ca. Chile.
Travel Tips: Dress well if you don't want to stand out, their clientele are generally quite wealthy. If you plan to take in a show, formal dress is mandatory.
