Next to Iglesia San Diego is Museo de Padre Almeida. This museum has an impressive collection of religious art, including of the the Quiteña and Cusqueña schools, and works attributed to Capiscara and Hieronymus Bosch. The guided tour takes you through the galleries and into the former cloister and the inner reaches of Iglesia San Diego. During the visit, you learn about the legend of renegade (and later, saintly) priest Padre Almeida, famous for saying “Hasta la vuelta, Señor” (Until I return, Lord).

Getting There
From Plaza San Francisco (4 blocks west of Trole stop Santo Domingo), walk 2 blocks up Calle Bolívar to Calle Imbabura. Turn left and walk down 9 blocks to Calle Calicuchima. Or take a taxi.
Travel Tips:
The guided tours are in Spanish. Photos are only allowed of the courtyards. The neighborhood is better patrolled now, but still has security issues. Visit only in daylight hours.
