The building on the northwestern side of the plaza above the row of arched, hole-in-the-wall shops, is the Palacio del Gobierno (Presidential Palace), also called Carondelet. The palace is open to the public. The half-hour to 40 minutes tours take visitors into several lavishly decorated salons. The mural by one of Ecuador's most famous artists, Guayasamin, in the stairwell illustrates Francisco de Orellana’s celebrated descent of the Amazon. A placard on the GarcÃa Moreno side marks the spot where President GarcÃa Moreno was assassinated. It is also possible to see presents received by current President Rafael Correa, received in several cities and ocations.
