The Plaza del Teatro is a pleasant, low-key alternative to the bustling Plaza Grande, and serves as a hub for a wide array of theatrical and musical activities. On the south side stands Teatro Sucre, which was built between 1879 and 1887 and serves as Ecuador's national theater. It is the premiere performance center for acclaimed plays and operas. In the northeast corner is the more local and experimental Teatro de Variedades Ernesto Albán. Additionally, the comfortable and modern Café del Teatro hosts frequent musical performances, most notably jazz, and the coffee there is better than in most of Quito. Finally, culture lovers can enjoy the plaza’s free outdoor concerts, including week-long jazz fests in April and September as well as religious music during holy weeks. A bronze statue of the deceased theatrical comic Ernesto Albán watches the action from his perch on one of the benches.
