Quito's historic center takes you back to the era of the Spanish Empire, with its beautiful colonial buildings and elaborate churches such as the Monasterio de San Francisco and the Compañia de Jesus. There are also several interesting museums in this area that house colonial and indigenous art, military memorabilia and relics that chart the country's checkered history from pre-Inca times to the present.
