Once the home of Quito’s best known philanthropist, this museum is now dedicated to María Augusta’s life and work helping Quito’s street children, for whom she was always, famously, making ice cream.
The downstairs rooms are set up like a museum, with portraits of María Augusta and her family, some of her personal diaries and letters, and numerous appliances used in the house throughout her life, such as an early refrigerator and washing machine. Some of the upstairs rooms have been preserved pretty much as they were when she died in 1987, offering a more detailed and somewhat personal insight into the way she lived; the comb she used each morning, what she ate for breakfast, and the clothes she wore. Although many of the items are personal to her, they also give a good general impression of how upper class Quiteños lived in the mid 1900s.
María Augusta was a great collector of art, and there are some interesting paintings and sculptures around the house, from colonial to contemporary. In particular, she was a great fan of the Quiteño painter Victor Mideros, and the house features what is probably the biggest collection of his work in the city.
