On the southwestern side of the Plaza de la Independencia (Plaza Grande) is the Iglesia de la Cathedral. It is unusual in Ecuador, in that it's refreshingly free of the top-to-toe decoration that adorns most churches, although it does feature several interesting paintings by artists of the Quito School. Although it is considered relatively austere by Ecuadorian standards, the 16th-century cathedral is probably the most important church in Ecuador, and the location for state funerals of the country’s political and cultural heroes. It is here that Quito’s liberator, Mariscal Sucre, is buried.

The church is completely different form the other churches. It is very sober and classy. The body of Sucre is here, he was a leader of independence. It is very cheap to get in, and the paintings and the site are worth seeing.
