On the southwestern side of the Plaza de la Independencia (Plaza Grande) is the Iglesia de la Cathedral. It is unusual in Ecuador, in that it's refreshingly free of the top-to-toe decoration that adorns most churches, though it does feature several interesting paintings by artists of the Quito School. Although it is considered relatively austere by Ecuadorian standards, the 16th-century cathedral is probably the most important church in Ecuador, and is the location for state funerals of the country’s political and cultural heroes. It is here that Quito’s liberator, Mariscal Sucre, is buried.
