Three blocks from Plaza Grande, the shimmering white Iglesia de Santa Bárbara stands out among the surrounding drab gray buildings. Although attractive enough with its stained glass windows and quaint fountain-bearing courtyard, the church’s exterior is rather unremarkable, and the black steel gate surrounding the church leaves one feeling a little less than welcome. Nonetheless, Iglesia de Santa Bárbara is an important historical monument and a key point of interest in the Cento Histórico. Constructed in the 16th century, Iglesia de Santa Bárbara was one of the first five urban churches in Quito. A stone cross, built next to the church, serves as a monument to this fact. It opens for mass at 5 p.m. on Saturdays and at 9 a.m. on Sundays.
