The Iglesia de Santo Domingo may at first seem like one of those churches that is far more impressive from the outside. However, step into its dimly lit, moody interior and you’ll find some surprising treasures; numerous paintings from the Quito School of Art hang in its side chapels, one of which also houses the church’s showpiece: a statue of the Virgin de Rosario, a gift from King Charles V of Spain. Unfortunately, the tower, which gives great views over Quito, is now unsafe to climb and will be closed for the foreseeable future until enough funds are raised to carry out the restoration work. Its museum is also worth a visit, housing an interesting collection of 16th and 17th century religious art around an intimate courtyard. The entrance is about 15 meters (49 ft) to the left of the main church door.
