Hidden up some stairs at the back of the Centro Cultural Metropolitano with no signs in sight, this museum can be tricky to find. Formerly known as the Antiguo Cuartel de la Real Audencia, thanks to its former function as a cuartel (army barracks), the museum underwent a large-scale expansion and refurbishment in 2002 and was subsequently renamed after its biggest donor, Alberto Mena Caamaño. He bequeathed his impressive collection of painting and sculptures to the museum in the 1950s, most of which is colonial art from the 16th and 17th centuries, attributed to well-known artists from the Quito School, including Miguel de Santiago and JoaquÃn Pinto. However, there are several more modern works as well.
