Housed in a spacious and attractively restored old hospital building just east of Plaza de Santo Domingo, the Museo de la Ciudad is certainly worth a visit, and is a good starting point if you are new to Quito and unfamiliar with its history. Two floors of models, interactive displays and memorabilia—from horse-drawn carriages to 17th-century pots and pans—map out Quito’s chequered past century by century in clear, unfussy displays. Beside each one is a written explanation in Spanish; if you don’t read Spanish, a guided tour is recommended, and these are available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish for an extra cost.
Another draw of the museum is the peaceful leafy courtyard around which it is built, offering a welcome respite from the bustle of Quito’s city center, and fantastic views over southern Quito and of the Panecillo. The reasonably priced café looks onto the courtyard, and is open to the general public as well as to museum visitors.
